Who Should Consider Orbera?
This system is recommended for obese adult patients who have a body mass index (BMI) between 30 and 40 and who have been unsuccessful with weight loss through diet and exercise alone. Most patients who are considered for this procedure are at least 30 pounds overweight. You must also be willing to participate in a diet and exercise program that is supervised by your health care provider.
Orbera may be right for you if you meet the above criteria and:
- You want a healthier life
- You have a desire to break through weight-loss barriers without having invasive surgery
- You want to fit into your favorite clothing again
- You do not have symptoms of heartburn while taking heartburn medications
- You have not been previously diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or esophageal reflux disease
- You have had no previous surgeries to your stomach or small intestines (there are some exceptions)
- You have not had prior weight loss surgery
- You are not on any blood thinner medication
Your doctor can help you fully determine if this medical procedure is a good fit for you and your weight loss needs.
Success with Orbera
Weight loss may be rapid following your procedure, with the majority of weight loss occurring during your first three months in the program. The remaining three months the balloon is in place, you will learn the right amount of food to eat so you can maintain your new weight.
On average, Orbera patients have lost 3.1 times the weight loss associated with diet and exercise alone. However, your individual results will be influenced by the adjustments made to your eating habits and a continual exercise regimen.
Most importantly, you will be overcome with feelings of joy and accomplishment in your weight loss success. The information, support, and tools you gained throughout your weight loss journey will enable you to stick to the healthy habits you have learned and to maintain your weight loss long-term. Our patients are thrilled with the results that they have seen with the program.
Preparing for Placement
Upon initial consultation with your health care provider, discussions will take place about:
- Your medical history
- Previous weight loss attempts
- Your weight loss goals
- Your commitment to the program
- Your comfort level about the entire Orbera process
After the decision is made to participate in the Orberamanaged weight loss program, a date will be scheduled for your procedure. You will also begin meeting with your professional support team. Your team of support experts may include a dietitian, psychologist, and exercise physiologist. They will develop a comprehensive program for you, which can include one-on-one expert guidance and coaching on fitness and nutrition.
Your doctor will give you steps that you need to follow in order to prepare for your procedure and for your weight loss journey.
The Orbera Procedure
This is a non-surgical procedure done under mild sedation. The deflated Orbera balloon is guided into your stomach through your mouth. Once in place, it is filled with a saline solution until it becomes the size of a grapefruit. Typically, this procedure takes only 20 to 30 minutes to complete and you can go home the same day.
After six months, the balloon is deflated and removed in the same manner it was placed. Again, this is a non-surgical procedure performed under mild sedation.
After Your Procedure
For the first few days after your procedure, you may feel uncomfortable while your stomach is adjusting to the presence of the balloon. It is not uncommon to experience nausea, vomiting, or abdominal discomfort. However, you will be provided the medical treatment necessary to relieve these symptoms.
For the first three days, you will be restricted to a liquid diet. Upon discharge, you will be given instructions on how to remain adequately hydrated. It is important you follow these specific instructions to prevent becoming dehydrated. You will be able to incorporate solid foods into your diet after liquids. It is generally recommended to begin with semi-solid foods and gradually incorporate fully solid foods into your diet. The transition to fully solid foods varies for each person and is dependent upon how well your body tolerates liquids. It is important to let your body be your guide and not rush this transition.
Upon discharge, you will likely be advised to avoid physical activity for 24 to 48 hours. Approximately two weeks after your procedure, you will feel well enough to begin exercising under the guidance of your health care provider and support team.
The Orbera 6 Month Program
During the six-month placement of your Orbera balloon, you will have regular meetings with your support team. Your progress will be monitored and you will receive valuable training and education. This involves the various lifestyle and nutrition changes you need to follow to achieve long-term weight loss success. These meetings with your support team will continue for a period of six months following the removal of your Orbera balloon.
What you learn from your individualized program will be essential to aid you in overcoming the challenges of retraining your appetite, adopting new eating habits, establishing an exercise regimen and meeting your long-term weight loss goals.
